Late last year the federal government of Nigeria shut down the new SIM registration in the who federation due to the new policy of linking NIN to every SIM card owned by any individual. It’s over four months since this has taken place, but am glad to announce to you all that you can start getting your SIM registration and do your welcome back for those that have lost their phone.
This good news followed as the Nigerian Federal Government’s resolve to lift the ban on new SIM registration on April 15, 2021. Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and the Digital Economy who bears the name Dr. Isa Pantami, alongside other industry stakeholders, made the National Identity Number (NIN) mandatory for acquiring and activating new SIMs for individuals, corporates, and SIM replacement.
From the statement made, it was clear that possession of a National Identity Number (NIN) will be the requirements for new SIM acquisition and activation, SIM replacement, new SIM activation for corporates, and Internet-of-Things/Machine-to-Machine (IoT/M2M), amongst others.
Now you can walk up to any SIM vendor and request to get any of your choices and do the necessary SIM registration. Note that you will be registering it with your NIN so that you can start making use of it as usual. If you have not yet done your NIN, make sure to it as the requirement for a new SIM depends on it.
